FCT Police Commissioner issues strict warning against illegal detention, extortion, others
The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Ajao S. Adewale, has issued a strong warning to police officers under his command, prohibiting them from engaging in illegal detentions, interfering in civil matters, and extorting money from citizens.
This directive follows several reports of unlawful arrests for bailable offences, extortion of complainants and suspects, and police involvement in civil issues, especially land disputes. Describing these actions as violations of constitutional rights and a disregard for the Inspector-General’s instructions, CP Adewale made it clear that such behaviour would no longer be tolerated.
He directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs) to immediately review cases in their custody and ensure the prompt release of suspects being held for minor, bailable offences once documentation and sureties are verified. The CP emphasized that bail remains free, warning that any officer caught demanding money for bail or documentation would face severe disciplinary measures.
Furthermore, the CP reiterated that the police have no business meddling in civil cases, particularly land-related disputes. He noted that any officer or supervising officer who violates this order would be held accountable. He also condemned the practice of demanding money before investigating cases, stressing that such acts amount to extortion and abuse of office, and warned that any officer involved would be prosecuted.
The public was also cautioned against offering bribes to police officers, as this constitutes a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. CP Adewale reminded residents that the police are not to be used for debt recovery or settling personal scores.
He urged members of the public to support the FCT Command’s ongoing efforts to promote professionalism, accountability, and the protection of human rights. He also encouraged citizens to report any cases of police misconduct to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) via the dedicated number 08107314192.
