Malami dumps APC, joins ADC
Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement was made on Wednesday through a personally signed letter by the senior advocate.
Malami explained that his decision was not borne out of anger or personal ambition, but driven by genuine concern over the worsening state of the nation and the hardship confronting ordinary Nigerians. According to him, insecurity, economic hardship, and political negligence have crippled the country while the government remains focused on politics rather than solutions.
In his statement, Malami lamented the daily struggles faced by citizens, especially in the North, where kidnappings, banditry, and terrorism have become widespread. He criticized the current administration for prioritizing political loyalty over national interest, accusing the government of abandoning governance and reducing appointments, policies, and projects to partisan affairs.
He stated, “Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives while the government prioritizes politics over the safety of its citizens.”
Highlighting the economic crisis, Malami said food prices have tripled, jobs are vanishing, and young people are left without hope, adding that the government is busy with propaganda rather than tangible action.
The former minister emphasized his decision to join ADC as a move to partner with a platform he described as built on justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal. He pledged his continued loyalty to the people of Kebbi State, promising not to abandon them but to amplify their voices on a better political platform.
He further called on all Nigerians to join the movement to reclaim the country from its current challenges, stating, “Nigeria belongs to all of us.”
Malami’s defection comes at a time of deep political and security tensions in the country, sending fresh waves through Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections.
