Accidental Bombing: NUJ Commiserates with Zamfara Govt, Zurmi LGA

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed profound grief over the recent accidental bombing in Tugar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State by the Nigerian Air Force. The tragic incident adds to a series of similar occurrences in conflict zones across Nigeria, where the military’s valiant efforts to protect the nation have sometimes resulted in unintended civilian casualties.
In a statement signed by the NUJ National Secretary, Achike Chude, the union praised the sacrifices of Nigeria’s armed forces but described the Zurmi incident as one “accidental bombing too many.” The statement highlighted findings from SBM Intelligence and The PUNCH newspaper, revealing that over 300 civilians have lost their lives due to military airstrikes since 2017. States like Niger, Yobe, Zamfara, Borno, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Katsina have borne the brunt of these tragedies.
The NUJ acknowledged the daunting challenges faced by the military in combating banditry and insurgency, while also emphasising the need for precision and accountability in modern warfare. “By the dynamics of modern warfare, including intelligence gathering and the development of guided military technology, such accidents should occur only rarely,” the statement noted.
While recognising the military’s expressions of regret and promises to investigate the incident, the NUJ urged for more decisive action to prevent such occurrences in the future. “This time around, all hands must be on deck to do better,” it stated.
The union called on the Zamfara State Government to ensure a comprehensive compensation package for the families of the deceased and adequate rehabilitation for the injured. It also appealed to the military to contribute to this effort as a gesture of solidarity and accountability.
In closing, the NUJ reaffirmed its support for the armed forces during these turbulent times, while urging all stakeholders to prioritise the safety of civilians in conflict zones.
