Ayra Starr opens up on fame, career struggles, life before stardom
Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has reflected on her journey to fame, admitting that her life might have taken a very different path if she had not found success in the music industry.
Speaking in a recent interview with EE72, the Mavin Records star said music completely changed the direction of her life, joking that she would likely have been unemployed without it.
“If I were not doing music, I would literally be unemployed. I do not even think I would be a content creator. That would be a lot of work. I would just be vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food,” she said.
The 24-year-old also recalled her excitement when she discovered that Don Jazzy and the Mavin Records team had been listening to her music before she was eventually signed to the label in 2020.
“I was so excited when I found out they were listening to my music. You know who it is,” she said.
Ayra Starr further spoke about the pressures of fame, admitting that she sometimes wishes people knew less about her because she tends to be very open during interviews.
“I really wish people knew less about me. Once the camera comes on, I cannot stop talking. And I feel like I overshare,” she added.
Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr rose to prominence after being discovered on social media by Don Jazzy, leading to her signing with Mavin Records.
Since then, she has become one of Nigeria’s leading global music exports, with successful projects such as 19 & Dangerous and The Year I Turned 21, alongside numerous awards and international recognition.
