Babangida describes Mokwa flood tragedy as ‘Act of God’
Former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has described the recent devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, which claimed over 200 lives, as unfortunate but an act of God.
Babangida made the remarks when he received a delegation from the Niger State Government, led by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, on a Sallah homage at his Uphill Residence in Minna.
The retired general expressed deep sympathy to the people of Mokwa and the entire state, urging residents to offer prayers for the repose of the souls lost in the disaster. “What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate, but it is ordained by Allah. It is beyond our powers, and this is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased,” Babangida said.
He commended the administration of Governor Umaru Bago for its developmental initiatives and urged the government to sustain its efforts. Babangida assured the delegation of his unwavering support for the state’s leadership and the people.
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Garba explained that the visit was aimed at seeking Babangida’s blessings and fatherly guidance, especially in the wake of the Mokwa tragedy. He acknowledged the former leader’s concern over the incident and thanked him for his consistent role as a statesman.
Garba further assured Babangida that the people of Niger State and the entire country remain grateful for his years of dedicated service, pledging that the current administration would not relent in its duty to uphold the state’s legacy and development.
