BREAKING: Adedamola clinches PDP ticket for Osun 2026 governorship election
Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the August 2026 Osun election.
Adedamola secured 919 votes to clinch the party’s ticket at the primary held on Tuesday at Adolak Hall in Osogbo, sealing a victory that followed the withdrawal of his only rival, Governor Ademola Adeleke, who formally resigned from the PDP on the eve of the exercise.
Chairman of the electoral committee, Humphrey Abba, announced that a total of 20 votes were declared invalid. He explained that one of the aspirants had stepped down before voting began, leaving Adedamola as the sole remaining contender.
“The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned,” Abba said.
Sunday Solarin, secretary of the electoral committee, clarified that Adeleke’s resignation came too late to remove his name from the ballot. According to him, the governor’s announcement on Monday night made it impossible to reprint fresh ballot papers ahead of the primary.
He added that delegates were duly informed that only Adedamola remained in contention and that any vote cast for Adeleke would amount to a wasted ballot.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 8, 2026, for the Osun governorship election, with political parties expected to submit the names of their flagbearers ahead of the poll.
