BREAKING: INEC releases official timetable for 2027 general elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally issued a notice announcing the timetable for the 2027 general election.
According to the commission, Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the dates during a news conference in Abuja on Friday.
Earlier, on February 4, the commission had indicated that despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly, it had finalised the election timetable and schedule of activities.
INEC stated that it had already submitted its recommendations to lawmakers but acknowledged that certain components of the timetable could be affected depending on when the amended Electoral Act is eventually passed.
Under the leadership of former Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the commission had previously announced long-term election dates spanning several decades, a move aimed at reducing voter uncertainty and addressing recurring logistical challenges associated with Nigeria’s general elections.
Further details are expected.
