BREAKING: Pope Francis passes away at 88 on Easter Monday
In a moment that has sent shockwaves across the Catholic world, Pope Francis, the beloved Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88. His passing was confirmed on Easter Monday, a day Christians around the globe celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
The somber news was delivered by Cardinal Kevin Farrell in an official statement released by the Vatican.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father, Francis,” Cardinal Farrell said. “At 7:35 a.m. this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was devoted to serving the Lord and His Church.”
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, ascended to the papacy in 2013 following the historic resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI. He was the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church.
In his tribute, Cardinal Farrell praised Francis for living out the Gospel with unwavering faith, courage, and love, especially towards the poor and marginalised.
“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of the One and Triune God,” the cardinal added.
The Vatican will now begin preparations for the conclave — the solemn gathering of cardinals to elect a new pope — which typically takes place between 15 and 20 days following the death of a pontiff.
As the world mourns the passing of a transformative and compassionate spiritual leader, the Church prepares to turn the page to a new chapter in its history.
