BREAKING: Tinubu renames UNIMAID to Muhammadu Buhari University
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday officially announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made during an expanded session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which was dedicated to paying tribute to the late Nigerian leader.
While delivering his remarks, President Tinubu described Buhari as a man defined by discipline, patriotism, and moral fortitude.
He acknowledged that Buhari was not without flaws, noting, “He was not a perfect man—no leader is—but he was a good, decent, and honourable man.”
Tinubu stated that although Buhari’s legacy would naturally attract debate, the former president’s incorruptible character, moral strength, and the integrity he brought to leadership would remain respected long after.
“He stood always ramrod—unmoved by the temptation of power, unseduced by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that sometimes comes to those who do what is right rather than popular,” he said.
He went further to describe Buhari’s years in office as guided by restraint, dignity, and a deep commitment to national unity and service. Reflecting on their political alliance that culminated in the historic 2015 election victory, Tinubu commended Buhari’s role in Nigeria’s first peaceful democratic transfer of power.
According to the President, Buhari’s governance set a moral tone rooted in transparency and justice, and his patriotism was more evident in his actions than in rhetoric.
The FEC chamber, filled with ministers, senior government officials, and aides, observed a moment of silence and prayers for the late leader.
The renaming of the university is seen as both a symbolic and strategic gesture, particularly as it anchors Buhari’s legacy in a region heavily affected by insurgency—where his administration channelled significant resources for reconstruction and stability.
President Tinubu concluded his tribute by affirming, “The incorruptible standard he represented will not be forgotten.”
