Brentford compound Manchester United’s woes with 3-1 victory
Manchester United’s struggles worsened on Saturday after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, putting manager Ruben Amorim under fresh pressure.
Brazilian forward Igor Thiago shone brightly for the hosts, scoring twice within the opening 20 minutes. He opened the scoring in the 8th minute after timing his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before slotting past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Twelve minutes later, he doubled Brentford’s lead by tapping in a rebound.
United briefly revived hope in the 26th minute when Benjamin Šeško capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to pull one back. However, their chance to level the game slipped away in the 71st minute when Bruno Fernandes saw his penalty saved by Brentford’s goalkeeper, Caoimhín Kelleher, who guessed right to deny the United captain.
The final blow came deep into stoppage time when substitute Mathias Jensen broke away on the counter and curled a long-range effort past Bayindir to secure Brentford’s 3-1 triumph.
The result handed Brentford a morale-boosting win, while United were dragged back into crisis mode just a week after beating Chelsea. With the international break approaching, Amorim’s future at Old Trafford now faces serious scrutiny.
