EFCC arrests Business Executive Aisha Achimugu at Abuja Airport

Prominent businesswoman and socialite Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu has been taken into custody by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to a statement from her legal team.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed the development to reporters on Tuesday, explaining that Achimugu was arrested by the anti-graft agency around 5 a.m. shortly after she voluntarily arrived in Nigeria from London.
It had earlier been reported that her legal representatives informed the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday that Achimugu intended to visit the EFCC on Tuesday. This was in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
Ojukwu noted that his client returned to the country in line with an undertaking made before the court to honour the commission’s invitation but was immediately apprehended at the airport.
“She immediately embarked on a hunger strike. She is a prisoner of conscience,” the senior lawyer claimed, stressing that this situation contradicts the principles of the rule of law.
When contacted by Nairametrics, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that Achimugu was expected to appear before the agency on Tuesday, following developments at the Federal High Court. However, when asked about her reported arrest at the airport, he said a formal response would be issued in due course.
