Flying Eagles set for FIFA U20 World Cup opener after strong friendly performances
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles wrapped up their friendly matches on a promising note ahead of the FIFA U20 World Cup, holding host nation Chile to a 1-1 draw before defeating Australia 3-1 in Santiago on Tuesday.
The Nigerian side will begin their campaign for glory on Monday, 29th September, with an opening match against Norway at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca. They will later face Saudi Arabia and Colombia in their remaining group fixtures.
The Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s national under-20 men’s team, boast one of the richest histories in African youth football. Since their FIFA U20 World Cup debut in 1983, they have been a regular force on the global stage, finishing as runners-up twice — in 1989 against Portugal and in 2005 against Argentina, captained by Lionel Messi.
Beyond their impressive records, the team is renowned for nurturing future Super Eagles stars, with the likes of Mikel Obi, Taye Taiwo, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Victor Osimhen all graduating from the squad to shine on the international stage.
