Gov Abiodun gifts Super Falcons ₦50 Million ahead of WAFCON qualifier
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has rewarded the Super Falcons with ₦50 million ahead of their second leg clash against the Amazons of Benin Republic in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 qualifier.
Governor Abiodun made the announcement at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, while hosting the national women’s football team on Monday. The second leg of the qualifier is scheduled to take place at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
Speaking during the visit, the governor said the return of the Super Falcons to the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena was proof that Ogun State was creating a positive impression in the sports sector. He revealed that his administration was committed to developing the stadium’s surroundings with facilities such as a four or five-star hotel, cinema, and shopping complex.
While congratulating the team for clinching their 10th WAFCON title, Governor Abiodun commended their dominance in African women’s football and lauded them for showcasing leadership, teamwork, and discipline.
“What you are doing goes beyond just playing football; it represents the spirit of excellence, resilience, and national pride,” he said.
In his remarks, the team’s Head Coach, Justin Madugu, expressed appreciation for the hospitality and support consistently shown by the Ogun State Government, noting that the MKO Abiola Sports Arena had always provided an enabling environment for the team.
Team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the players, thanked the governor for his generosity and continuous encouragement. She assured him that the Super Falcons would keep making Nigerians proud through their performances.
Nigeria, the defending champions of WAFCON, had earlier defeated Benin Republic 2-0 in the first leg. The return leg in Abeokuta will determine which side qualifies for the 2026 WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
