Gov Bago lauds Nigeria’s UNGA statement, backs sub-regional call to action

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has described Nigeria’s national statement at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as both “inspiring and sobering,” affirming that the message delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu captured the nation’s priorities in a rapidly changing world.
Speaking after attending the Assembly in New York, Governor Bago said the address highlighted not only Nigeria’s national agenda but also the central role of sub-regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union in advancing peace, development and global justice.
“The appeal for a new financial architecture aligns strongly with our New Niger Vision,” the Governor noted, linking Nigeria’s call for reforms in global economic governance to Niger State’s domestic agenda. He highlighted that Nigeria and West Africa, with its mineral wealth and agricultural potential, has long pushed for deeper economic integration under ECOWAS and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Niger State, by design of nature, falls within this belt of opportunity. We fully support the emphasis on local industrialization as alluded to in the national statement, because it reinforces the aspirations of millions across Niger State, Nigeria and West Africa who seek fairer opportunities in global trade,” he said.
Governor Bago added that Nigeria’s message at UNGA went beyond national interests, calling it a “sub-regional call to action.” He stressed that Niger State’s policies particularly in agriculture, climate resilience, and security would continue to align with this broader vision.
“As Governor of Niger State, I am convinced that our local initiatives must complement the wider agenda. Sub-regional bodies like ECOWAS and continental frameworks like the AU are Nigeria’s natural partners in turning diplomacy into tangible benefits for our citizens,” Bago affirmed.
The Governor concluded by emphasizing that Nigeria’s strong voice at the UN reflects its leadership role in West Africa and its determination to translate multilateral commitments into practical gains for the region.
