The official handing and taking over ceremony between the outgoing Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, and the newly appointed Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, is currently taking place at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The event marks a major transition in the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent appointment of new service chiefs to strengthen the nation’s security operations.

A Historic Moment

Senior military officers, government officials, and invited guests are present at the ceremony, which features a parade of honour, signing of handover documents, and the formal exchange of command symbols between the two top Air Force chiefs.

Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, who has led the force since 2023, is expected to deliver a farewell address highlighting his administration’s achievements and challenges. His successor, Air Marshal Aneke, will also outline his vision for the Nigerian Air Force under his leadership.

About the New Air Chief

Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who becomes the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff, was appointed last week by President Tinubu. Born in Makurdi, Benue State, he hails from Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. He joined the Nigerian Air Force in 1993 and has built an impressive career with over 4,300 flying hours and decades of command and operational experience.

He is widely known for his expertise in aviation safety and air operations management. Aneke holds degrees in Physics, International Affairs and Diplomacy, and Political Economy and Development Studies, and is currently pursuing a PhD.

Focus on Security and Modernization

Though the ceremony is still ongoing, Air Marshal Aneke is expected to emphasize teamwork, modernization, and improved welfare for personnel as key priorities for his tenure.

Defence analysts believe his leadership will bring a renewed focus on intelligence-driven air operations and stronger coordination with ground forces in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats.

National Importance

The ongoing ceremony symbolizes not only a smooth transfer of authority but also the continuation of discipline and professionalism within the Nigerian Air Force. The event is being closely followed by defence observers and citizens who hope the new leadership will usher in greater efficiency and stability in Nigeria’s air operations.

More updates are expected as the ceremony progresses…
