Kano sets to vaccinate 3.9m children in June 2025

By Ifeoma Nwovu
As part of efforts to eradicate polio through the June 2025 Outbreak Response (OBR) vaccination campaign across Kano state, the State Government has launched plans to vaccinate 3.9 million children under five years old.
Speaking at a media dialogue in the state, Director-General of the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr Nasir Mahmoud, maintained that the campaign aligned with the national strategy.
Dr. Mahmoud explained that the aim was to stop polio transmission and uphold Nigeria’s polio-free status through coordinated immunisation efforts.
He also stressed the resurgence of the type 2 poliovirus in some areas of Kano, adding that factors responsible for the resurgence include community resistance, poor data reporting, and insecurity, which affected previous immunization rounds.
“Ungogo Local Government Area recorded the highest number of unresolved non-compliance cases during the May 2025 campaign”.
Dr Mahmoud appreciated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s consistent support, especially the prompt release of counterpart funding.
He said LGAs were now being ranked monthly to track performance and motivate improved results in vaccination coverage.
UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Rahma Rihood Farah, confirmed four polio cases in 2025 across Warawa, Bunkure, Nasarawa, and Kano Municipal LGAs.
Mr. Farah urged the state to declare a state of emergency on polio and routine immunization, stressing that the current situation requires urgent and coordinated action.
