Lawyer says victims of leaked nude photos can seek both civil and criminal justice
A legal practitioner has stated that individuals whose nude photos or videos are leaked without consent can take both civil and criminal actions against the offenders.
According to the lawyer, such acts violate a person’s right to privacy and dignity, and the law provides clear penalties for those responsible.
He explained that under Nigeria’s Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015, sharing or publishing intimate images without consent is a criminal offence that can lead to imprisonment or fines.
The lawyer also noted that victims can file a civil lawsuit for damages, seeking compensation for emotional distress, reputational harm, and invasion of privacy.
He advised victims not to stay silent out of fear or shame but to report such cases to the police and consult legal professionals immediately.
“Both the law and the courts are clear ,anyone who circulates or threatens to circulate another person’s private photos commits a serious offence,” he said.
He further urged social media platforms to act quickly to take down such content once reported and cooperate with law enforcement in investigations.
