Mexican President Sheinbaum groped in public, vows to press charges
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum has been groped by a man who attempted to kiss her while she interacted with citizens on the streets of Mexico City, an incident that has reignited national conversations about sexual harassment and women’s safety in the country.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 4, as Sheinbaum walked to an event near the National Palace, greeting supporters, shaking hands, and taking photos.
A viral video showed a visibly intoxicated man approaching the president from behind, attempting to kiss her neck and embrace her.
Sheinbaum quickly pushed his hands away and turned to confront him before a government official intervened, stepping between them.
Despite the uncomfortable moment, Sheinbaum appeared calm and said with a smile, “Don’t worry.”
Authorities later confirmed that the man had been arrested by state police. Speaking at her daily press briefing on Wednesday, Sheinbaum said she would press charges, framing the incident as symbolic of the harassment faced by many women in Mexico.
“This is something I experienced as a woman, but it is something that all women in our country experience,” Sheinbaum said.
“If I do not file a complaint, where does that leave all Mexican women? If they do this to the president, what happens to all the other women in the country?”
The event has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many praising Sheinbaum for her composure and decision to take legal action, describing it as a stand against gender-based violence and impunity in Mexico.
