Nigeria to start exporting urea by 2028, NMDPRA says
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has announced that Nigeria will begin exporting urea fertiliser by 2028.
The announcement was made by Saidu Mohammed, Chief Executive Officer of the NMDPRA, during a visit to the Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited plant in Eleme, Rivers State.
Mohammed said ongoing investments in fertiliser production facilities, including expansions at Indorama and Dangote Fertiliser, are expected to enable Nigeria to produce enough urea to meet domestic demand and begin exports within the next two years.
He added that Nigeria’s abundant resources and growing industrial capacity should reduce the country’s reliance on imports of value-added products like urea.
The NMDPRA boss also said the midstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry require significant investment, estimating that between $30 billion and $50 billion would be needed to fully develop the segments.
Mohammed said the authority will continue engaging stakeholders and supporting efforts to create a favourable environment for investors in the fertiliser industry.
The planned export drive is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to diversify the economy and increase revenue from non-oil sectors.
