Nigerian student jailed in UK for raping 17-Year-Old Girl
A Nigerian postgraduate student in the United Kingdom, Chiemka Okoronta, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a 17-year-old girl in Bradford.
According to the BBC, the incident occurred on March 25 after Okoronta and the victim boarded a night bus in Morley, Leeds. The court heard that the girl’s phone battery had died, leaving her stranded, and Okoronta offered to share a taxi to Bradford.
However, instead of taking her home, he directed the vehicle to his flat, where he lured the teenager inside, locked her in a bathroom, and raped her. The victim later escaped and used a passer-by’s phone to contact the police.
At the Bradford Crown Court on Monday, Okoronta was found guilty on multiple counts of rape. He will serve an additional three years on extended licence and has been placed on the sex offenders register for life. The court also heard that he is likely to be deported to Nigeria after completing his sentence.
In a victim impact statement, the young girl described how the attack had devastated her life, saying, “This incident has turned my life upside down. I have flashbacks of what happened to me, I have nightmares – one minute I feel fine and the next minute it all comes back.”
Judge Sophie McKone described Okoronta as a “dangerous sexual predator” who deliberately isolated and assaulted the victim.
The West Yorkshire Police commended the victim for her courage in immediately reporting the incident.
Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe said, “I would like to commend the victim in this case for her immense bravery in coming forward straight away to report this horrific crime. I would urge anyone who has been the victim of a sexual offence to please report it to us so we can take action.”
