NUJ @ 70: Alhassan Yahaya calls for better welfare for Journalists
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Comrade Alhassan Yahaya decries poor renumeration of Journalists across the country.
In a press briefing to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Union at the national headquarters of the Union, he laments the way journalists are treated in Nigeria.
He said “unlike in other countries where Media professionals are celebrated, in Nigeria, the sector is often overlooked. The glamour associated with the Media has been eroded by the shabby treatment and poor renumeration of Journalists and other media workers”.
He is expreesed concerns capable hands and even professionals are leaving the Media industry due to poor welfare. He said
“Low pay and poor staff welfare are driving skilled individuals away from the Media industry. Long hours, tight deadlines, and poor working conditions create an unhealthy environment, leading to stress-induced ailments and exposing journalists to risks on assignments”.
The national president while congratulating journalists across the country, inform them of the rise of misinformation and misinformation which is posing serious threat to public discourse.he enjoyed them to embrace the technological advancement in order to counter misinformation, disinformation, fake News and even hate speeches.
He said “The rise of misinformation and disinformation poses a serious threat to public discourse. …
Technological disruption necessitates adaptation to changing consumption habits and combating hate speech and fake news”.
As the Union marks it’s 7 decades of existence, comrade Alhassan Yahaya calls for a better, accountable and responsive journalism, investigative and critical journalism, global perspectives and national interest journalism and strengthening Media literacy to combat misinformation, disinformation and fake news.
The event was attended by journalists from different mediums ranging from Channels, Voice of Nigeria (VON) Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), African independent Television (AIT) to TVC NEWS.
