NUJ FCT Council Fulfils Campaign Promise with IIJ Scholarships for Journalists
In a remarkable step towards advancing professional development, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has launched the 2024/2025 Scholarship Program for journalists pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (PGDJ) at the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) Abuja.
The Secretary of Council, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said the journalist must have been in good financial standing with the union for the last two years and must have NUJ Identity cards for 2023 and 2024. Such journalists must have attended NUJ congresses and participated in union activities.
The statement also added that the candidate must be ready to pay 50% of the school fees while the council foots the rest.
This initiative fulfils one of the key campaign promises by the newly elected executives led by Chairman of Council Comrade Grace Ike, who had pledged to prioritise capacity building for journalists within the Council.
“When we promised to invest in the professional growth of our members, we meant every word. This scholarship is a testament to our commitment to making the NUJ FCT Council a hub for excellence and career advancement.”
“We are hopeful that the year 2025 will hold more promising opportunities for our members, “ she said
“This scholarship program reflects our unwavering focus on capacity building and ensuring our members remain competitive in today’s dynamic media industry.”
“The program will support 20 journalists across various chapels under the Council. Beneficiaries will pay only 50% of the tuition fees, with the Council subsidising the remaining 50%.”
Comrade Ike reiterated her administration’s resolve, adding, “Our mission is not only to serve but to elevate the profession and provide the tools for our members to thrive. Together, we are redefining what it means to be part of the NUJ FCT Council.”
According to her, this will go a long way towards promoting active participation in the union activities.
The Council urged journalists to seize this opportunity to enhance their skills and professional standing, marking another milestone in the Council’s drive to empower its members.
Chapel Chairmen have been asked to nominate candidates based on eligibility, and those who meet the conditions will be enrolled for the 2024/2025 academic session of the institute.
