NUJ FCT press week begins with prayers at NASFAT mosque
The 2025 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council Press Week officially kicked off on Friday with a congregational prayer held at NASFAT Mosque in Utako, Abuja.
In his sermon, the Acting Zonal Missionary Imam of NASFAT FCT, Imam Marouf Farouji, urged the NUJ leadership to remain steadfast in their dedication to serving humanity and upholding the principles of journalism.

“First, let us thank Almighty Allah for the gift of life, for being human, and for being Muslim,” he said. “The Holy Qur’an covers all aspects of life, including journalism, communication, and information. When people are poorly informed, it fosters corruption in governance and society. But awareness of consequences encourages ethical behavior.”
Imam Farouji praised journalists across all media platforms—print, audio, visual, and multimedia—for their crucial role in shaping society and keeping the public informed.
“Journalism is here to stay. It significantly contributes to societal transformation and enlightenment, regardless of religion—Muslim or Christian.
The information journalists provide helps individuals fulfill their civic and spiritual duties. May Allah continue to support them,” he concluded.
Vice Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo, who represented the Council at the event, said starting the week with prayer reflects Nigeria’s religious values.
“Nigeria is a religious country, and journalists are no exception. As we launch this year’s Press Week, it was fitting to begin with an Islamic prayer here at NASFAT Mosque,” he explained.

He added that a Christian service is scheduled for Sunday, demonstrating the union’s commitment to inclusivity and seeking divine guidance.
“As we dedicate this week to God, we are also pushing for better welfare for journalists in the FCT, including improved housing and enhanced protection,” Ndambabo said. “These are among the key focuses of our activities this week.”
Other events planned include a public lecture and the revival of press clubs in secondary schools across the FCT.
He concluded with a call for professionalism: “We urge journalists to uphold ethical standards and to combat fake news. The fight against misinformation starts with us.”

The opening prayer drew journalists from Abuja and beyond, setting a solemn and focused tone for the Press Week activities.
