Obasanjo Library gives EFCC, Police 7-Day ultimatum, demands ₦3.5bn compensation over invasion
The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Inspector General of Police to publicly apologise for last Sunday’s invasion of its premises.
It is also demanding ₦3.5 billion in compensation, ₦1 billion as restitution to victims of the raid, and ₦2.5 billion for damage to its reputation and that of its chief promoter, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, OOPL Managing Director Vitalis Ortese described the EFCC’s actions as “unlawful” and “a direct assault on everything the institution stands for.”
On August 9 and 10, EFCC operatives stormed the OOPL complex, arresting 93 suspected internet fraudsters, and seizing 18 vehicles and several mobile devices. The management claims the operation violated the rights of more than 100 people and tarnished the image of the library and its founder.
Ortese accused both the EFCC and the Nigeria Police Force of acting with malice, saying:
> “The actions are aggravated, unconstitutional, oppressive, and arbitrary… calculated to wreak maximum damage on the legitimate business interests of our client and its chief promoter in the eyes of right-thinking members of the public, both in Nigeria and internationally.”
The OOPL is demanding:
Public apologies from the EFCC Chairman and the Inspector General of Police, published across major TV, print, and online platforms, including social media.
Restitution for arrested persons and those whose vehicles were seized.
₦1 billion for victims’ damages and bodily injuries.
₦2.5 billion for reputational and financial damage to OOPL and Obasanjo.
The library warned that failure to meet these demands within seven days — from August 13, 2025 — would prompt legal action, with expanded claims. It has engaged lawyers, security experts, and civil society partners to pursue the case.
