‘Omije Ojumi’ Gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu Is dead
Popular Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu, widely known for her hit song Omije Ojumi, has died.
The news of her death was confirmed on Tuesday night by a close source, although an official statement from her family is yet to be released. Further details surrounding her passing are expected in the coming days.
Akinnanu’s death comes several months after she publicly appealed for prayers while battling a serious leg ailment. In late 2025, a video from a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, circulated widely on social media, showing the gospel singer seated with her affected leg stretched out as prayers were offered for her healing.
During the service, the presiding cleric disclosed that Akinnanu had been suffering from persistent bleeding in her leg, prompting fervent prayers for divine intervention. The development sparked widespread concern, with fans and fellow believers across the country organising prayer sessions and sharing messages of encouragement online. The exact medical nature of her condition, however, was never made public.
Bunmi Akinnanu began her musical journey at the age of 10. She later left a banking career to pursue gospel music full-time, a decision that would define her life and ministry. She rose to national prominence with Omije Ojumi, a deeply emotional worship song that resonated with many Nigerians and became a staple in churches and Christian homes.
Her death marks a painful loss for the Nigerian gospel music community, where she was regarded as a devoted minister whose songs brought comfort, hope and spiritual reflection to countless listeners.
Tributes are expected to continue pouring in as fans, colleagues and church leaders mourn the passing of a singer whose voice left a lasting imprint on gospel music in Nigeria.
