Outrage in Ogun as wandering Elephant kills farmer

Tension has gripped residents of Itasin-Imobi in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State following the death of a farmer, Musa Kalamu, who was reportedly killed by a wild elephant believed to have strayed from a nearby government-reserved forest.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday when the elephant allegedly invaded Kalamu’s farm and launched a deadly attack. According to local sources, the animal had been a long-standing menace in the community, frequently damaging crops, destroying fishing equipment, and now, taking a life.

“This elephant keeps coming into our community to destroy our crops, damage our fishing nets, and now, it has taken a life,” one alarmed resident lamented.

The people of Itasin-Imobi are now calling for immediate government intervention to prevent further loss of life and property.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, stated that officials are already en route to the affected area. Also corroborating the report, Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo, in a WhatsApp message on Tuesday, revealed that the Divisional Police Officer in Ogbere received a report around 4:20 p.m. on July 28 regarding the fatal elephant attack.

“The DPO Ogbere received information from Itasin community on 28/07/2025 at about 1620hrs that elephants escaped from government reserve and attacked one Musa Kalamu, who died on the way to the hospital,” Ogunlowo noted.

He added that officers of the Ogun State Forestry Commission were alerted to help contain the threat, and calm has since returned to the community.

A disturbing video currently circulating online shows the lifeless body of the deceased, identified by locals as Kala, with visible signs of injury. Voices in the background of the video expressed grief and fear, urging the government to urgently address what they described as an ongoing threat to their safety.

“This is Kala; he was attacked by the elephants at Onitasin. You can see the marks of the attack all over his body with some part of his intestine outside. The government should please come to our aid; the problem with these elephants is too much in our community,” a resident cried out.
