PDP postpones 103rd NEC Meeting amid massive defections
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting earlier scheduled for October 15 at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Monday, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the decision was taken due to “recent developments” within the party. He added that a new date for the NEC meeting would be communicated to members in due course.
“All NEC members should please note the postponement and be guided accordingly,” Ologunagba said.
The NEC, which serves as the highest decision-making body of the PDP, includes serving and former presidents, vice-presidents, governors, principal officers of the National Assembly, the Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman and secretary, state chairpersons, and other key stakeholders.
The postponement comes as the party prepares for its national convention slated for November 15 to elect new members of the NWC. However, tensions have risen following a suit filed by some party members, believed to be allies of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), seeking to stop the convention.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, however, rejected their ex parte application, directing that the defendants be served with a motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction. The case was adjourned to October 14 for hearing.
Meanwhile, the PDP continues to experience a wave of defections, with several governors and lawmakers joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah is expected to formally announce his defection to the APC today, while Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas is also reportedly considering a similar move.
