Trump pushes plan for $2,000 tariff dividend for citizens
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has revived his proposal to issue $2,000 payments to Americans, funded through money collected from tariffs on imported goods. He described the plan as a way to put direct financial support into the hands of citizens, especially during a period of increased living costs.
According to Trump, the payments would come from tariff revenue rather than government borrowing. He argued that the move would allow Americans to benefit from international trade.
Economists and policy experts have challenged the feasibility of the plan. Many note that the amount of money generated from tariffs each year may not be enough to cover payments for all eligible citizens. Some specialists also warn that increasing tariffs on imported goods could lead to higher prices in shops, which may affect low income households the most.
The proposal is not currently a law. It is a political idea being debated in public discussions. However, it has gained attention because many families continue to face financial pressure, and the promise of additional income has sparked interest across different voter groups.
