Trump signs Epstein Files Transparency Act amid questions over full disclosure

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed into law the Epstein Files Transparency Act, mandating the release of government records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The move ends Trump’s months-long opposition to the bill, which passed Congress with rare bipartisan support.

Trump, a former associate of Epstein, announced the signing on social media without any public ceremony. While the legislation requires the Justice Department to make unclassified files publicly available, experts warn that the administration could still delay disclosure, redact sensitive content, or cite ongoing investigations to limit full transparency. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer warned that the president must implement the law “faithfully” and avoid withholding documents under the guise of active investigations.

Epstein, a wealthy financier, cultivated close ties with influential business figures, politicians, and celebrities. He was accused of trafficking girls and young women for sex over many years. His 2019 arrest and subsequent death, ruled a suicide, fueled public outrage and conspiracy theories suggesting a cover-up to protect powerful individuals.

The passage of the Transparency Act drew emotional reactions in Congress, with abuse survivors cheering as the vote passed. The law directs the Justice Department to release searchable files, including transcripts, flight logs, and communications, within one month, while allowing limited exceptions for personal privacy or genuine security concerns.

Analysts have raised concerns that ongoing probes — including a new investigation Trump ordered into Epstein’s alleged ties with Democrats — could delay the disclosure.

Lawmakers and transparency advocates are watching closely to ensure the files are fully accessible. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Justice Department would continue to provide “maximum transparency under the law” while encouraging victims to come forward.
