Wizkid weighs in as online feud with Seun Kuti escalates
Grammy-winning singer, Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has reacted publicly to the growing online confrontation between his fans and Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, son of the late legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The controversy began last week after Seun Kuti accused Wizkid’s fan base, known as Wizkid FC, of showing disrespect to his father’s legacy by drawing comparisons between Fela and the global Afrobeats star.
Tensions escalated on Tuesday evening when Wizkid took to his Instagram story to express his displeasure, sharing a series of posts that appeared to be directed at Seun Kuti.
In one of the posts, Wizkid reposted a viral video of a woman speaking in Yoruba, in which she criticised Seun Kuti and suggested that Wizkid’s international success has helped keep Fela’s legacy relevant among younger generations.
In the video, the woman accused Seun of constantly courting controversy and questioned his conduct, arguing that Wizkid’s global influence has introduced Fela’s music and legacy to a new audience beyond the older generation.
Following the repost, Wizkid went further by making direct comments aimed at Seun Kuti in a series of blunt and emotionally charged posts, declaring himself more successful than the late Afrobeat icon and insulting Seun personally.
The posts, which quickly spread across social media, sparked mixed reactions, with fans divided over the remarks and many calling for restraint from both sides.
As of the time of filing this report, Seun Kuti has not issued an official response to Wizkid’s comments, while the online exchange continues to fuel debate over legacy, respect and generational influence within Nigerian music culture.
