EPL: Salah’s Late Penalty seals Liverpool win over Burnley
Mohamed Salah scored a dramatic stoppage-time penalty to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory over Burnley on Sunday, restoring their lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Newly-promoted Burnley held firm for much of the match, but Hannibal Mejbri’s late handball gifted Liverpool the decisive spot-kick, which Salah confidently converted to maintain the Reds’ perfect start to the season.
The win, Liverpool’s fourth straight in the league, puts them three points clear of Arsenal, who briefly went top after defeating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Saturday.
Arne Slot left new signing Alexander Isak out of the squad as part of a gradual integration plan but still fielded a strong attack featuring Salah, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike. Liverpool dominated possession and created chances early, with Gakpo, Ibrahima Konate, and Ryan Gravenberch all going close, while Burnley’s Jaidon Anthony fired over in a rare counterattack.
Burnley were reduced to ten men in the 84th minute when Lesley Ugochukwu was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Wirtz, intensifying Liverpool’s pressure.
That pressure finally told deep into stoppage time when Mejbri handled in the box, allowing Salah to fire home and secure all three points.
The victory ensures Liverpool have won all four league matches this season, each decided after the 80th minute, underlining their resilience in the title race.
