Gunmen have killed Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, parish priest of St. Charles Parish, Eha Ndiagu, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, police sources confirmed that the priest was attacked around 9:10 p.m. on Friday by armed men riding on a motorcycle during a heavy rainfall.
On arrival at the scene, police operatives reportedly found the cleric’s ash-coloured Toyota Camry (2008 model) with registration number ENU 145 SU riddled with bullets, vandalised, and thoroughly searched by the assailants. Twelve expended shells of 7.62×39mm ammunition were recovered at the scene.
The body of the priest was taken to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The state criminal investigation department (SCID) has been directed to take over the case, while efforts are being intensified to track down the fleeing gunmen and bring them to justice.
