Broadcast Journalist Somtochukwu Maduagwu killed in Abuja robbery attack
Arise News Channel has confirmed the death of its news anchor, reporter, and producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.
In an official statement, the management described her passing as a huge loss, noting that she was “a cherished member of the Arise News family and a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.”
The statement further read: “Sommie, 29, tragically passed away following an armed robbery incident in her residence that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police. Beyond the airwaves, she was a lawyer, a professional, and a supportive colleague, as well as a friend to many.”
Arise News extended condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, and loved ones, stressing that while her voice has fallen silent, her “spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”
The channel also called for a thorough investigation, urging the speedy apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators.
