BREAKING: Court grants N500m bail to Former AGF Malami, Wife, Son in Abuja
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), in the sum of ₦500 million.
Ruling on Wednesday, Justice Emeka Nwite also admitted Malami’s wife, Bashir Asabe, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, to bail in the same sum of ₦500 million each.
The court ordered that each defendant must provide two sureties in like sum, who must own landed property within Asokoro, Maitama or Gwarimpa areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned the former justice minister and his family members on charges bordering on money laundering amounting to ₦8,713,923,759.49.
All the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read in court.
The anti-graft agency had also linked assets estimated at ₦212 billion to Malami as part of its ongoing investigations.
Recall that on December 30, 2025, the court ordered the remand of the defendants at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of their bail applications.
Justice Nwite ruled that the bail conditions were necessary to ensure the defendants’ availability for trial, stressing that bail remains a constitutional right unless compelling reasons are shown to deny it.
