Akwa Ibom: CAS Honored as “Friend of the people, unveils game-changing school project
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is Strengthening its Civil-Military Relations (CMR) by commissioning a state-of-the-art block of three fully furnished classrooms.
This include a principal’s office, and staff rooms at Edemaya Unity College’s permanent site in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State. In gratitude for these sustained efforts, the Edemaya community bestowed the prestigious traditional title “UFAN EDEMAYA” (Friend of the People of Edemaya) on Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, during the Friday, 20 February 2026 ceremony.

The Chief of Air Staff Special Intervention Project honored retired Air Vice Marshal Iboro Harry Etukudo, an illustrious Akwa Ibom son.
Representing the CAS, Chief of Civil-Military Relations Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet called it a key non-kinetic operation to win hearts, build trust, and support national development.
He highlighted that 10 such projects nationwide have earned widespread praise, linking retired officers to their roots while advancing the NAF’s mandate.
The CAS, via his representative, praised AVM Etukudo (Rtd) for the thoughtful initiative and urged students, staff, and locals to maintain the facilities, live peacefully, and share security tips to combat crime. He also encouraged Edemaya youths to explore Armed Forces careers.

Project facilitator AVM Etukudo (Rtd), reflecting on his 40-year career since 1985, thanked the NAF for this tribute to his service in national and continental security.
The college, community-founded for students denied government school spots, now kicks off development at its permanent site. He appealed to the Akwa Ibom Government to adopt and expand it.
Akwa Ibom’s Education Commissioner, Professor Ubong Essien Umoh, representing Governor Pastor Umo Eno, hailed the NAF’s grassroots impact, aligning it with state goals for better education and living standards. Community leaders presented the CAS a staff of honor, sealing a bond of friendship. This event showcases NAF’s dual commitment to security and nation-building.
