Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has forwarded the name of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the state’s new Deputy Governor.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who said the nomination follows Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy in the event of a vacancy.

The position became vacant after the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, resigned on March 27, 2026.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf made the nomination after consultations with key stakeholders and urged the State Assembly to expedite action on the screening and confirmation process.

Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, aged 48, is a long-standing political figure in Kano politics with experience spanning both elective and appointed positions. He previously served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Government, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

He also held key roles including Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

In the 2023 general elections, Garo was the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

The statement said the nomination is aimed at strengthening governance and improving service delivery under the Yusuf administration.
