Lagos Govt denies report claiming Sanwo-Olu was asked to resign, reaffirms Governor’s fitness

The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was “ordered to resign on health grounds,” describing the claim as false and misleading.

The report had suggested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and some stakeholders were dissatisfied with the state’s leadership and had begun a transition plan.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, rejected the claim outright, insisting that no such directive was given and that the governor remains in good health and fully active in office.

“This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign,” the statement read, adding that the story was “fake news” aimed at misleading the public.

Akosile said Governor Sanwo-Olu remains “of sound mind and in good health,” noting that he continues to discharge his responsibilities as chief executive of the state.

He also clarified that the governor recently received his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who formally informed him of his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election, stressing that the meeting was cordial and consistent with established political tradition.

Obafemi Hamzat has since received backing from Sanwo-Olu, who publicly endorsed his ambition, describing him as well-prepared to lead the state after the current administration.

Sanwo-Olu, first elected in 2019, is expected to complete his second term on May 29, 2027, in line with Nigeria’s constitutional limit.

The government urged the public to disregard the report, reaffirming that governance activities in Lagos remain stable and unaffected by rumours of political transition.
