FCT Indigenes demand Security and Transparency amid Gishiri demolition crisis

The Abuja Original Inhabitants Youths and Empowerment Organisation (AOIYEO) has called for an urgent security presence in Gishiri to safeguard indigenous people displaced by recent demolitions. The group alleges that criminals, locally known as ‘Baba n Bola’, have been looting properties and attacking displaced residents who attempt to resist.

In a statement signed by its president, Commandant Isaac David, AOIYEO urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, to deploy security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to protect the affected people and their properties. The organisation also demanded that the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provide relief materials to prevent a potential hunger protest.

Rising Insecurity and Looting

Isaac David highlighted the escalating insecurity in Gishiri, stating that the demolition had triggered a wave of property theft and other crimes.

“Immediately after the demolition, we witnessed a surge in thefts and more serious crimes. Many displaced residents, having lost their homes and businesses, now face additional trauma as criminals take advantage of the situation. Preliminary investigations by AOIYEO suggest a rise in opportunistic crime amidst the chaos of relocation.”

He questioned the government’s commitment to the welfare of its people, stating, “How can you promise a better tomorrow when you cannot even protect our belongings? If Minister Wike does not prioritise the safety of displaced indigenes, the situation will spiral out of control. We demand a clear plan to address the growing crime wave and provide assurance that lives and property will be safeguarded.”

Clarification on ₦40 Billion for Traditional Rulers

AOIYEO also urged Minister Wike to clarify the controversy surrounding the alleged ₦40 billion allocated to traditional rulers. The organisation warned that failure to address the issue could lead to further unrest, citing recent attacks on traditional leaders.

“Just yesterday, the traditional ruler of Gishiri was beaten to a stupor over this issue, and the Sapeyi of Garki was publicly embarrassed and insulted. If anything happens to our royal fathers due to misinformation, Minister Wike will be held responsible. He must immediately address this on air to protect their lives.”

Allegations Against FCT Development Control

The group further accused developers and officials of the FCT Development Control Department of orchestrating illegal and forceful evictions without proper notice or biometric capturing of displaced residents.

“The government initially claimed the demolition was for road expansion, but developers, in connivance with some Development Control officials, are now exceeding the marked areas to create access to their plots. This must stop immediately before it escalates further.”

AOIYEO demanded that the Minister direct the FCT Lands and Compensation Department to document all demolished properties and ensure fair compensation in line with the 2025 global standards.

“The indigenous communities demand compensation for those affected and an immediate halt to further demolitions. We also remind Minister Wike of his promise to grant the people of Gishiri the Right of Occupancy (R of O). Justice must be served.”

Call for Immediate Action

The AOIYEO has urged the FCT Administration to halt further demolitions, ensure security for displaced persons, and address the allegations surrounding the ₦40 billion reportedly allocated to traditional rulers. The group warned that failure to act swiftly could lead to further social unrest and hardship for indigenous residents.
