The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert, warning residents in six states to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash floods from Wednesday, April 9 to Friday, April 11, 2025.

According to NiMet’s weekly bulletin, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Edo, Delta, and Ogun are expected to experience moderate to heavy downpours during this period. The agency also forecasts light to moderate rainfall in parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Abia, Delta, and Imo, while some regions across the country may only see light showers or remain dry.

NiMet cautioned against flash flooding, especially in areas with heavy rainfall, and warned that strong winds could accompany the rain, posing risks to lives, properties, and infrastructure, including buildings, trees, and electrical systems. The agency advised Nigerians to avoid driving through floodwaters, as they may be deeper or stronger than they appear.

In addition, NiMet highlighted the potential for slippery roads and reduced visibility, which could lead to traffic disruptions. The public was urged to take safety measures, such as turning off electrical appliances before the rain and securing loose outdoor items to prevent damage.

The agency encouraged residents in affected areas to stay alert and monitor official weather channels for updates to reduce the risks associated with the severe weather conditions.
