PDP Governors rule out Merger plans

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) has dismissed any possibility of a merger or coalition with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, asserting that the PDP is strong enough to contest and reclaim power on its own.

Speaking at the end of a two-day strategic meeting in Ibadan, Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, emphasized that while the PDP is open to welcoming new parties or individuals, it will not engage in any merger.

“There are speculations nationwide about possible mergers or coalitions, but the Forum has resolved that our party, the PDP, will not be joining any coalition or merger,” he stated. “However, we remain open to individuals, parties, or groups willing to join us to enthrone quality leadership in 2027.”

Present at the meeting were governors from Enugu, Taraba, Zamfara, Oyo, Plateau, Adamawa, Osun, and Bayelsa, while Delta and Akwa Ibom were represented by their deputies.

In the communique issued, the Forum also reiterated its earlier position on the office of the National Secretary of the party. It resolved that the Deputy Secretary should continue to act pending a substantive nomination from the South East.

Solidarity with Governor Fubara

The governors also expressed strong support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State amid the political turmoil in the state, following the declaration of a state of emergency.

“The Forum restates its solidarity with Sir Siminalayi Fubara on the ordeal into which his state and people are being subjected to. We stand with him till the end,” the statement read.

Concerns Over Rising Insecurity

The Forum condemned the increasing insecurity in states like Borno, Katsina, and Edo, describing it as “alarming.” They urged the federal government to adopt a bottom-up approach in reviewing and reorienting its security priorities and strategies.

During a gala night at the University of Ibadan, Governor Bala Mohammed further predicted that the poor governance under the APC would hand victory to the PDP in 2027.

“PDP governors are delivering good governance, and by God’s grace, Nigerians who have seen the difference will vote for us to return to power,” he declared.

He also reiterated the governors’ unity behind Governor Fubara, saying, “Even in Rivers where there are challenges, we are all united in ensuring Fubara continues his good work.”

The meeting signals the PDP’s renewed focus and unity ahead of the 2027 elections, as the party looks to reposition itself as a viable alternative to the ruling APC.
