Jack Draper edged out by Casper Ruud in gruelling Madrid Open final
British number one Jack Draper fell just short of claiming his second Masters 1000 title in as many months, and his first ATP trophy on clay, following a narrow defeat to Casper Ruud in the Madrid Open final.
In a fiercely contested match that lasted nearly two and a half hours, Ruud prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to seal his maiden Masters 1000 title at the third attempt. The Norwegian had previously finished runner-up in Miami in 2022 and Monte Carlo in 2023, losing to Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively.
Although Draper, 22, was unable to lift the silverware, he can take pride in a performance that will see him rise to a career-high world ranking of No 5 today, a remarkable achievement for a player who had never before progressed beyond the quarter-finals of a tour-level event on clay.
