Stop speculation, allow us do our job – EFCC speaks on VeryDarkMan
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of Martins Innocent Otse over what it described as serious financial misconduct, following his consistent refusal to honour multiple invitations extended to him by the agency.
In a statement released by the Commission on Tuesday, the anti-corruption agency explained that Otse was invited for questioning after it received several petitions alleging his involvement in financial crimes. The EFCC urged Nigerians to avoid making assumptions about the motives behind its actions and allow it to carry out its constitutional responsibilities without interference.
“The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour,” the statement read, adding that charges would be filed against the suspect once investigations are completed.
According to the agency, Otse was contacted through his known addresses and communication channels, but he ignored all invitations sent to him.
“He refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him,” the statement added.
The Commission also addressed reports of public criticism and comments allegedly made by Otse against its activities, making it clear that his arrest had nothing to do with those remarks.
“While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such attacks. The relevant law enforcement agency will be allowed to look into them,” the EFCC noted.
Emphasising that it acted within the law, the EFCC disclosed that a valid remand order was secured to keep Otse in custody while investigations continue.
“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the Commission. The appropriate Remand Order was obtained in this regard,” the statement explained.
The Commission further revealed that administrative bail had been granted to the suspect, and he would be released once the bail conditions are met.
