NAFDAC clarifies sachet alcohol ban timeline
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that the temporary suspension of the nationwide ban on sachet alcohol will expire on 31 December 2025.
Speaking in Abuja, Mr Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of NAFDAC’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Directorate, addressed widespread public misconceptions surrounding the status of the ban, stating that it remains in place but has been provisionally relaxed.
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by 31 December 2025. After this date, full enforcement of the ban will commence,” Mr Azikiwe said.
He explained that the temporary relief granted by the Minister was designed to allow manufacturers and regulators adequate time to collaborate and develop a more structured and effective approach to the implementation of the ban on sachet alcohol.
Mr Azikiwe emphasised that the lifting should not be misconstrued as a reversal of the ban, urging the public to disregard misinformation suggesting a permanent policy shift.
Highlighting NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts, he noted that sensitisation campaigns had been carried out across all 36 states, targeting distributors and retailers.
“We have sensitised distributors and emphasised that alcohol must not be sold to individuals under the age of 18, which is also clearly stated on product labels,” he added.
Mr Azikiwe commended the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) for actively supporting NAFDAC’s public awareness drive.
The ban, which came into effect on 1 February 2024, applies to alcohol sold in sachets or PET bottles smaller than 200ml.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to phasing out these products entirely by the end of 2025, in a bid to ensure a safer and more regulated alcohol industry.
