Mob kills eight wedding-bound travellers in Plateau

A tragic incident unfolded in Plateau State on Friday evening when eight travellers heading for a wedding were killed by a mob in Mangun District, Mangu Local Government Area.

The victims, who were travelling from Zaria in Kaduna State to Quan’pan Local Government Area, lost their way and found themselves in a volatile area already suffering from a series of terrorist attacks.

Caught in the tense atmosphere, the travellers fell victim to mob violence that claimed their lives. Several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Mangu.

Reacting to the incident, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow and condemned the mob action as senseless and completely unacceptable. The governor, who visited both the survivors and the scene of the violence, noted that although the community has been under pressure from relentless terrorist attacks, it did not justify taking innocent lives.

He described the incident as a tragic setback for a state striving to remain hospitable and safe for all Nigerians. Governor Mutfwang emphasised the importance of law and order, warning that jungle justice would not be tolerated. “Today is a tragic day for us in Plateau State. This act of violence is utterly unacceptable, and the government will not sweep it under the carpet,” the governor stated.

He assured that the Plateau State Government would cover the full cost of treatment for the injured victims and ordered security agencies to launch a full investigation to bring those responsible to justice. The governor also announced that a high-powered delegation would be dispatched to Kaduna State and Zaria to commiserate with the bereaved families and the Zazzau Emirate.

Governor Mutfwang used the occasion to strongly denounce the ongoing wave of attacks in Bokkos, Mangu, Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Bassa Local Government Areas, calling attention to the worsening humanitarian situation resulting from continuous killings and displacement.

He further appealed to the people of Plateau to resist provocation and maintain peace, reiterating that violence would only worsen the insecurity affecting the region.
