Family confirms death of Nollywood star Alex Ekubo
Nollywood actor and model, Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke, has died at the age of 40 following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
His family announced his passing in a statement released on Wednesday via his verified Instagram page, confirming that the actor died at Evercare Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with the illness.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, son, brother and friend, Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke,” the statement read.
“After a brief but courageous battle, Alexx passed away at Evercare Hospital due to complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.”
The family described the late actor as one who endured his pain with “remarkable strength, unwavering faith and enduring hope,” adding that he remained optimistic throughout his treatment.
They also appealed for privacy and prayers as they mourn his passing, while noting that details of his funeral arrangements would be communicated later.
The news has triggered widespread grief across Nollywood, with colleagues, fans and industry stakeholders paying emotional tributes to the late actor on social media.
Veteran actress Funke Akindele described him as a close friend, expressing regret over not being able to see him before his death, while other industry figures including Bolanle Ninalowo, AY Makun, Kate Henshaw, Mo Abudu and others also mourned his passing.
Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Ekubo hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. He studied Law at the University of Calabar after attending Federal Government College Daura.
He began his acting career in 2003 with Sinners in the House and rose to prominence through notable roles in films such as Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, and A Sunday Affair.
Beyond acting, he was also a model, producer, television personality and philanthropist, and was widely recognised for his influence in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
His death marks another painful loss for Nollywood, which has in recent years lost several prominent figures across film, music and television.
