International Women’s Day: NAWOJ urges Nigerian Women to demand greater leadership inclusion
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called on women across Nigeria to unite, organise, and demand greater inclusion in leadership and decision-making positions.
The call was made in a statement issued to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day, signed by the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Aishatu Ibrahim, and the National Secretary, Wasila Ladan.
According to the association, International Women’s Day is not only a moment to celebrate the achievements of women but also an opportunity to renew the push for equality and justice for women in Nigeria.
NAWOJ noted that the 2026 theme, “Accelerate Action Now,” highlights the urgent need to move beyond discussions and take deliberate steps to remove barriers limiting women’s participation in governance, economic development, and national leadership.
The association observed that Nigerian women continue to contribute significantly to national development through their roles in families, communities, businesses, and various professions. However, it said women remain largely underrepresented in positions of authority and decision-making.
NAWOJ therefore urged women to rise with unity, courage, and determination to claim their rightful place in leadership and national development.
The association also paid tribute to women in conflict-affected communities who continue to rebuild their lives and families despite the challenges of displacement and violence.
It called on government and political institutions to remove structural barriers preventing women from fully participating in governance and leadership.
NAWOJ also advocated the passage and implementation of affirmative policies, including electoral reforms and legislative measures that would guarantee greater representation for women in political decision-making.
Reaffirming its commitment to gender equality, the association said it would continue to use the media to amplify the voices of women and girls, challenge injustice, and advocate policies that promote dignity, safety, and equal opportunities for all.
NAWOJ further encouraged Nigerian women to support one another and boldly step into leadership roles in order to build a more inclusive and equitable society.
