Iran condemns “savage” Israeli strikes on Lebanon, calls for global action
Iran has condemned what it described as “savage” Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon, following attacks that targeted positions of the Hezbollah movement, a group backed by Tehran.
In a statement on Friday, Iran’s foreign ministry called on the United Nations, the international community, and regional countries to confront what it termed Israel’s “warmongering,” while extending condolences to the families of Lebanese civilians killed in the assault.
Israel confirmed it carried out a series of strikes on Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon on Thursday, saying the attacks were necessary to prevent the group from rearming after recent losses, including the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, last year.
The Lebanese health ministry reported one death from the latest bombardment.
Although Israel and Lebanon signed a ceasefire agreement in November 2024 to end more than a year of hostilities, Israel maintains it reserves the right to strike Hezbollah targets it considers a threat.
The latest escalation follows a tense period in which both Israeli and U.S. forces launched strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during a 12-day conflict in June, further straining regional stability.
