Kaduna Communities face blackout as transmission tower collapses

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that vandalism and severe weather caused the collapse of a transmission tower in Kaduna, leading to power disruptions in several parts of the state.

In a statement on Saturday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s general manager of public affairs, said tower 7 on the Kaduna tower line I and II in Rigasa community fell on Thursday after a heavy downpour and windstorm. She explained that during inspection, engineers discovered that vandals had stolen some parts of the tower, weakening its structure and making it prone to collapse.

According to her, the incident mainly disrupted power supply in parts of Kaduna South, affecting communities such as Kinkinau, Yan Tukwane, Kabala West, and Unguwan Muazu. However, she clarified that Kaduna North was not affected.

“To reduce the impact, TCN advised Kaduna Electric to link its 33kV Mogadishu feeder with the 33kV Abakwa feeder so that customers in Mogadishu can still have access to power,” the statement read.

Mbah further noted that engineers are already dismantling the collapsed structure to clear the site and begin work on erecting a new tower. She apologised to residents in southern Kaduna over the outage and assured that the company is working to restore electricity as soon as possible.
