NACA assures Nigerians of steady supply of HIV drugs amid US aid freeze

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has reassured Nigerians, especially those living with HIV, that the country has a steady supply of antiretroviral drugs, adding that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N4.8 billion for HIV treatment.

In a statement, the Director-General of NACA, Dr Temitope Ilori said the move became imperative following concerns raised during a recent World Health Organization (WHO) press conference.

She explained that the Federal Government had taken proactive steps to address a potential shortage of HIV drugs, including the recent allocation of an additional N300 billion to the health sector in the 2025 budget by the Senate.

‘’The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved $1.07 Billion to finance the healthcare sector reforms under the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) programme, and also approved N4.8 billion for HIV treatment, while the Nigerian Senate also recently allocated an additional N300 billion to the health sector in the 2025 budget,’’ She explained.

According to the statement, these measures are part of efforts to cushion the impact of the US government’s temporary pause on aid and to close immediate funding gaps.

While acknowledging the US government’s support over the past two decades, Dr Ilorin said the pause presents an opportunity for Nigeria to mobilize its resources, take ownership, and ensure a sustainable HIV response.

She assured Nigerians, particularly those living with HIV, that there was no shortage of drugs or consumables, and no immediate stop of services for HIV treatment, testing, and prevention in the country.

‘’Our treatment centers and pharmacies will continue to have sufficient anti-retroviral drugs, ensuring uninterrupted access to care,’’ NACA DG maintained.

Dr. Ilori maintained that NACA was committed in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
