Nigeria dismisses Trump’s religious intolerance claim, says allegation is baseless
The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly rejected recent comments by former United States President Donald Trump, who claimed that Christians were being attacked in Nigeria and suggested possible U.S. military action in response.
In a statement issued in Abuja, government officials described Trump’s comments as “misleading and unfair,” stressing that Nigeria is not a religiously intolerant country. They said the government remains committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens, regardless of their faith.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s security agencies are already addressing isolated cases of violence that sometimes appear to have religious undertones, but are mostly linked to banditry and communal disputes.
Officials also urged the international community to seek verified information before making statements that could fuel tension or misrepresent the country’s image.
Meanwhile, the National Security Adviser and service chiefs reportedly held a closed-door meeting to review the situation and prepare a formal diplomatic response.
The government reiterated its call for cooperation between nations to promote peace and understanding, rather than actions that could deepen divisions or create unnecessary panic.
